Chef Hazel J, born as Kizzy Joe Ellis, offers a unique take on international cuisines. Hazel believes that food is art, a means of self-expression. Her culinary philosophy draws inspiration from her interests in fashion, the arts, and her refined palate. Hailing from the culturally diverse Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, Hazel developed a deep appreciation for multicultural cuisines from a young age. Her journey into the world of cooking began as a little girl, where she observed her mother preparing traditional southern American dishes, absorbing her techniques and recipes. In addition to southern flavors, her extended family being Caribbean also taught her some of their national dishes and spice blends.


When Hazel combines her already eclectic tastes with her love for fine art and fashion, something interesting happens, and food art emerges. Hazel continually strives to imbue her artful cuisine with various cultural influences in a manner that evokes emotions and feelings. Her culinary journey took flight in 2018, where she would sell plates to college friends. Later, she went on to catering private events, hosting brunches, and orchestrating intimate gatherings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hazel developed a herbal brew using a blend of herbs, fruits, and spices, known for its immune-boosting properties. Sharing this recipe with the community, her brew gained widespread recognition, aiding families in their recovery process.


Formerly recognized as Boujie Platter Catering, Hazel has rebranded her company as Chef Hazel J LLC, embarking on a new culinary path. Her current mission revolves around fostering awareness regarding healthier food and lifestyle choices, as well as reversing generational diseases.
